Before the start of the final match,Minerva Youngsters Football Club coach spent some time with former Indian player Sanjeev Maria. The coach was briefing the experienced forward about the tactics for the match and as the final ended,the coach had the last laugh. Maria’s header in the second half meant that Minerva Youngsters clinched the title with a 3-2 margin over SGGS College,Sector 26 on the concluding day of the GRB league Cup played at Sector 17 Stadium.
It was a tense start to the match as both the teams made constant attacks. Sunny of Minerva Youngsters drew the first blood in the match when he netted a goal in the seventh minute of the match to put his team ahead by 1-0. Ten minutes later,Billy extended the lead for Minerva Youngsters when he sent a curling shot into the top corner of the goal. At half-time,Minerva Youngsters were leading by 2-0.
The second half saw SGGS forwards regrouping their energy and making constant inroads into the oppositions penalty area. SGGS got their first goal of he match in the 61st minute of the match to make the score board read 1-2 in their favour. But Maria had some other plans in his mind. The experienced mid-fielder scored the third goal for the Minerva Youngsters team in the 78th minute to raise the final win hopes for the team. SGGS got another goal before the final whistle but their effort was not sufficient.
Earlier in the day,Minerva Youngsters ended the challenge of Molon Labe FC with a 4-1 win in the first semi-finals while SGGS College scored a 2-0 win over Minerva Academy in the other semi-final.
Sunny of Minerva Youngsters was adjudged as the best striker of the tournament as he scored 14 goals in five matches. Sanjeev Maria of Minerva Youngsters was adjudged as the best mid-fielder of the tournament while Nikhil of Khalsa College was adjudged as the best defender.
