Man stationed at IAF station defrauded of Rs 25.06 lakh

Islam, having created an institutional account in his wife's name, proceeded to transfer Rs 25,06,083 through over two dozen transactions for stock trading, block trading, and IPO subscriptions.

A man stationed at 12 Wing, Air Force Station, Chandigarh, was defrauded of Rs 25.06 lakh between December 2023 and February 4, 2024, in the guise of making investments by an investment management company discovered through Facebook. The victim, Mohammed Safiqul Islam, who resides at SNSOs Mess 12 Wing, Air Force Station, Chandigarh, filed an FIR with the cybercrime cell.

Islam, having created an institutional account in his wife’s name, proceeded to transfer Rs 25,06,083 through over two dozen transactions for stock trading, block trading, and IPO subscriptions.

The victim lodged an FIR with the cyber crime cell. Sources said Islam had opened an institutional account in the name of his wife. Later, he recharged the institutional account and transferred Rs 25,06,083 in the shape of investments in stock trading, block trading, IPOs subscriptions through more than two dozen transactions.

In his complaint to police, Islam reported, “I joined Goldman Sachs (India) Securities Management Ltd through groups invite link on Facebook on November 29, 2023. On December 27, I asked for an application form and one Mila K Roy forwarded me the application link. On January 1, I received a WhatsApp message that my application was reviewed and I can open an institutional account. I opened the account in my wife’s name and later the account was activated. The company, Goldman Sachs, posed as an investment company with high returns and promised to achieve 10 fold profit within a short span of time. I started transferring money for stock trading, block trading and IPO subscriptions from my BOB account, which was jointly held by me and my wife.”

“Through the institutional account opened in his wife’s name, Mohammed Safiqul Islam invested Rs 25,06,083 in various accounts through more than two dozen transactions. He reported to the police that he made all the transactions when the company representatives assured them high returns. The suspects, who were named in the FIR by Islam, used to give analysis of stocks and IPOs through WhatsApp to the IAF personnel. But after getting all the payments, suspects freezed his institutional account opened in the name of Islam’s wife. The victim had made the first transaction of Rs 50k on January 11 this year and the last transaction of Rs 50k was made on February 4,” a police officer said.

When contacted over the phone, Islam declined to make a comment stating he needs permission from his high-ups to speak with the media. SHO of Cyber Crime police station, Inspector Ranjeet Singh, said, “Investigation is on.”

A case was registered under sections 419 (impersonation), 420 (cheating), 467 (forged documents) 468 (forgery with electronic record), 471 (using forged documents as genuine) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC at Cyber Crime police statopm, Sector 17.
