Man shot dead in suspected honour killing

A newly married couple was fired upon at close range on Monday at a roadside restaurant located near Balachaur on the Chandigarh-Nawanshahr-Jalandhar highway resulting in the death of Ranjit Singh alias Rana,of Sham Nagar,Majhitha.

A newly married couple was fired upon at close range on Monday at a roadside restaurant located near Balachaur on the Chandigarh-Nawanshahr-Jalandhar highway resulting in the death of Ranjit Singh alias Rana (28),of Sham Nagar,Majhitha. His wife Jasmeet Kaur (24) sustained injuries.

According to police,Ranjit Singh,his wife Jasmeet Kaur and his mother Gurmit Kaur were coming back from Barhu Sahib (Himachal Pardesh) in his car and had stopped to get a punctured tyre repaired. While the mechanic was repairing the punctured tyre they decided to have lunch.

After lunch,Ranjit approached his car when a Swift car drove nearby and three assailants,with their faces covered,fired at him.

The couple had reportedly married against the wishes of the girls’ parents. The police registered a case against Gurnam Singh and Gurdev Singh both sons of Lakhwinder Singh,and Dalbir Singh of Faridewala,Ferozepur. While Gurnam and Gurdev Singh are brothers,Dalbir Singh is the cousin of Jasmeet Kaur,said police.
