A man allegedly shot dead his sister over her “inter-caste love marriage” outside a gurdwara in a village in Punjab’s Moga district, and surrendered before the police Thursday.

According to the police in the Daulewala village, Harmanpreet Singh was arrested after he surrendered, and a pistol was recovered from him. They said Harmanpreet shot Simran Kaur dead late on Wednesday.

Sub-inspector Balwinder Singh, Additional Station House Officer, Kot Ise Khan Police Station, told The Indian Express, “He was upset over his sister’s inter-caste love marriage which she had solemnised around two years ago. While the woman’s family is from the Arora Sikh community, her husband’s family is a Rai Sikh”.

The police lodged a First Information Report (FIR) based on the statement of Bholi, Kaur’s sister-in-law. In her statement, Bholi told the police she and Simran had gone to attend a religious fair at Gurdwara Baba Tulsi Das Jhuggi Wale in the Daulewala village. She said Harmanpreet came to the fair with a weapon and shot Simran in the head.

“He shot her as he was upset with her love marriage with my brother, Inderjit Singh alias Labha. Harmanpreet wasn’t happy with this marriage, and used to feel humiliated that her sister married of her own will,” Bholi said in her statement to the police.

The police said an FIR was registered under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and sections 25, 27, 54, and 59 of the Arms Act at the Kot Ise Khan Police Station.
