After 40-year-old Raju Singh Sahota,a resident of Dhanas, reportedly went missing in May 2008,81-year-old Shingara Singh has not had a moment of peace. For Shingara is the missing man’s father and believes that Raju may have been abducted and murdered by his business rivals.

But a father’s persistent rantings have had no effect on the Chandigarh Police, which has failed to even register an FIR in the matter. Only a missing complaint was lodged in the in the Daily Diary Report on May 18,2008.

Why? “According to our investigation,Raju has fled to Dubai as he was unable to pay money borrowed from his friends. Moreover,Shingara is not cooperating with us in the investigation. He has not supplied the date of birth and the complete name of his son,” explains Sub-Inspector Kirpal Singh,Dhanas Police Post.

When questioned if the police had evidence to corroborate the claim that Raju had gone to Dubai, the reply was negative. “We are trying to gather proof,” he said.

Shingara does not buy this argument. “Why would my son leave home at a time when he had just started the construction of his house? Even if he has run away, the police should produce some evidence instead of registering a case of cheating against him,” he says.

A year ago,Raju,a small-time property dealer, had started the construction of his house at his native Rampur village in Gurdaspur district in March last year.

“On April 28,2008,Raju told me that he is going to Chandigarh to get money from his partner as he was running short of money and asked me to stay back to look after the construction work. On May 3,Raju called me on his mobile from Chandigarh and told me that he will return soon,” Shingara told Newsline.

When Raju didn’t turn up,Shingara tried to contact his son on his mobile phone which was switched off. Raju’s wife informed Shingara that on May 4,2008,Raju had received a call on his mobile during which he had a heated argument with the caller. He reportedly left the house in a huff on his motorcycle and never returned.

“Where is my son? I have no source of income and I am living in the gurdwara of Sector 38-West,Chandigarh. His partner told me that Raju had gone to Dubai and will return soon but when I confronted him and asked for a contact number, the partner failed to give a satisfactory reply. I believe my son has been murdered,” said Shingara.
