Reversing a trial court order, the Himachal Pradesh High Court on Tuesday sentenced Narinder Singh — a contractor from Bharmour — to six months in jail for trying to bribe a Himachal Administrative Services (HAS) officer. The court gave Singh time till August 20 to surrender.

The court also slammed the trial court for acquitting Singh, who had tried to bribe Rakesh Kanwar, the additional district magistrate of Bharmour in 2002. The accused, according to Kanwar’s complaint, had tried to give him a bribe of Rs 10,000 in his office on December 12,2002.

The court of Chamba special judge, however, had acquitted Singh on December 3,2007. In 23-page order,Gupta claimed that court of Chamba Special Judge had gravely erred in holding that the investigation was unfair and could not be relied upon.
