Man held for Rs 2 cr visa fraud

The Chandigarh police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested a person who had been accused of duping scores of youths on the pretext of sending them abroad on work and study visas.

The Chandigarh police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested a person who had been accused of duping scores of youths on the pretext of sending them abroad on work and study visas. The accused,identified as Charanjit Singh alias Goldy of village Kathgarh,Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district,had cheated many people of more than Rs 2 crore on the pretext of sending them abroad.

He also took the complainants to Mumbai and supplied them fake visas for Canada. Goldy has been running an office at the Prime Tower building near the Jalandhar bus stand. The arrest was made by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the CID wing of the police on Tuesday. Goldy is wanted in a case of cheating,fraud and forgery registered at the Sector 34 police station on July 16.

He has another case of cheating registered against him at the same police station and had been declared a proclaimed offender (PO) in another case registered at Kathgarh. According to the police,the accused was running his office with the name ‘ACME Carrier World’ from Sector 34,Chandigarh,along with Aroop Bhattacharya and his wife. The Bhattacharyas have already been arrested.

Speaking to Newsline,DSP (CID) Anil Joshi,said,“We have taken the accused on a four-day police remand. He has links in Mumbai and Delhi and over 55 people had complained against him and two of his partners.”

The police are likely to get more information from him. The three took money from people and promised to send them to the USA and Canada.
