The UT Inspector General of Police (IG) has ordered an inquiry into an incident where an Ambala resident,Amit Garg, who had reached the city with his mother’ s dead body in his car after she reportedly committed suicide, was told to contact the Haryana Police after he called up to help.
Instead of contacting the Haryana Police and keeping the body in a mortuary on human grounds, the police told him to go to Ambala. Amit’s body was discovered in a hotel near Ambala on Thursday morning. The inquiry will be conducted by the SP,Operation and Training,RS Ghumann who will be submitting his report within a week. The IG today met the DSP PCR and SDPO along with the Station House Officer (SHO) of the area from where the call was made.
The incident took place on February 22,when Garg,33,a lecturer at an engineering college in Lalru, called up the Chandigarh Police seeking help as his mother was dead.
Sarla Garg,55,Amit’s mother had reportedly committed suicide after an altercation between the two at their house in Ambala.
She consumed some poisonous substance and was found in their house by Amit who took her to a hospital in Ambala. The doctors at the hospital declared her dead on arrival. Hoping that some other hospital would bring his mother to life,Amit put his dead mother in his Indigo car and took her to Panckula without completing the legal formalities at the hospital.
When a private hospital in Panchkula also gave him him the same answer,Amit drove his car to Chandigarh and called up the Police Control Room (PCR) for help. He was advised to go to Ambala as the matter had taken place there and it was outside the jurisdiction of the Chandigarh Police. Amit is also reported to have gone to an office of an English daily where he was advised the same in the presence of the police.
On Thursday,Amit’s body was found in a hotel in Ambala while his mother’s body was recovered from his car which was discovered from a roadside ditch. Amit had reportedly committed suicide by consuming cellphose tablets.
When contacted,UT IG PK Shrivastava told Newsline,“I
have started an inquiry into the whole matter to find out if any procedural lapse took place on the part of the Chandigarh Police. Prima facie evidence makes it clear that everything happened in Ambala, but the inquiry has been marked to find out if there was any goof up.”
