Man dies at PGI,kin blame powercut
The death of a 37-year-old patient at the PGI on Wednesday night led the family to allege that the patient died due to a disruption in power supply.
The death of a 37-year-old patient at the PGI on Wednesday night led the family to allege that the patient died due to a disruption in power supply. The three-hour long powercut at the PGI caused a temporary suspension of work in the normal OT,ICU and other standard procedures.
Randeep,an accident patient,was admitted in the PGI on Wednesday night. His family claimed that while his operation was scheduled on Wednesday night,the blood matching procedure was delayed due to a disruption in the power supply,thus leading to his death.
While the family did not lodge an official complaint,Manju Wadwalkar,PGI spokesperson,said: “The power supply was disrupted in Nehru Hospital,but the hospital has a 24-hour power backup facility in the critical care areas. The allegations are baseless and we have not received any complaint in this regard.”
While power supply in most areas of Nehru Hospital was disrupted,authorities maintained that power backup was available in the emergency wards.
Officials at the PGI,meanwhile,admitted that power supply was disrupted from 10 pm to 1 am on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday,due to a “fault” of the UT Electricity department.
This was the third time in the last two months that such a powercut occurred at the hospital even after the hospital had recently installed its own 66 KV power station.
Recently,a 40-year-old underground water pipe had burst at the hospital,leading to suspension of water supply in most parts of the hospital for over 20 hours. Authorities at the PGI,said they are diverting a large amount of their sanctioned funds for the replacement of old infrastructure.
