The Mohali police has arrested a man for allegedly raping his 19-year-old daughter, who went missing from her father’s home around a month ago. The matter came to light when the “kidnapped” daughter, after being found by the police, stated before a local magistrate that she ran away to her mother’s place after being raped by her father.
Based on her statement, the police on Friday registered a case of rape against her father (name withheld), who is around 50 and a resident of Mauli Baidwan village (Sector 80). The accused is a part-time astrologer and the editor of a weekly newspaper published from Chandigarh, police said.
According to the police, the daughter, a college student, went missing from her house at Mauli Baidwan on July 14. On August 8, her father complained to the police that he suspected a youth acquaintance of the girl to be behind her kidnapping, following which a case was registered at the Sohana police station.
However, when the police traced the girl, she was found to be living with her mother (who is separated from her father) in Yamunanagar, Haryana. The girl was brought back to Mohali where she recorded her statement before a magistrate under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
In her statement, she alleged that her father sexually abused her and raped her which forced her to run away from her home. She also alleged that her father’s sister and mother were involved in the incident and helped in the conspiracy against her.
Based on her allegations, the police registered a case of rape, criminal conspiracy and criminal intimidation under sections 376, 120B and 506 of the IPC at the Sohana police station.
“We have arrested the father who will be produced in a local court on Saturday. Meanwhile, we’re verifying the allegations against the other female members before taking any further action,” a police official said.
