Malerkotla virtually shut down on Thursday, a day after the discovery of cow carcasses in a nallah led to tension in the town.
Hindu organisations called for a shutdown in the town, including schools, colleges, industries and markets, and even sat on railway tracks demanding action against the culprits.
Police had registered an FIR under the cow slaughter act against unidentified persons last night, but was not yet able to identity anyone behind the act. A 12-member action committee under the leadership of Kewal Krishan Jindal was formed to take up the issue.
Till the filing of this report, they were sitting on the tracks, causing the Amritsar-Dadar Express and Dadar to Amritsar Express to be diverted. They stopped the Shatabdi Express in the evening which had to be diverted too.
SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu said they were talking to the organisations and trying to get the dharna lifted. At 8 am, various Hindu bodies organised a show of strength in the main markets. All government schools, private schools, public and private sector offices were shut.
Earlier in the morning, the bodies had decided to cremate the carcasses, but later decided that they would not do so until the culprits are arrested.
