A major fire was reported at Apna Bazaar departmental store,run by the Punjab Civil Supplies (Punsup) department,in Phase II,Mohali,on Tuesday afternoon.
Though stocks estimated to be worth Rs 15 lakh were gutted in the inferno,over a dozen of the store employees and customers were safely rescued. Also,the first-floor office of the Food and Civil Supplies department and adjoining showrooms of the market were saved from the blaze. Some official records were,however,destroyed.
Fire Station Officer Avtar Singh said three fire tenders were rushed to the spot on receiving a call at 1.55 pm. It took almost an hour to douse the fire. Besides rescuing the trapped persons inside the store,half of the stock was also saved from loss, said Singh.
The source of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
Meanwhile,Punsup District Manager Surinder Singh has constituted a committee to probe the cause of fire. Deputy Commissioner P S Mand also rushed the spot to take stock of the relief and rescue operations.
