The arrest was made under the supervision of DSP Naveenpal Singh Lehal (PPS), Special Crime Cell & Nodal Officer, PO Wing, and led by SI Balwinder Singh
In a major breakthrough, Mohali police has arrested Gaurav Kumar, the prime accused in the double murder of senior journalist K J Singh and his mother, who had been absconding since 2020. Kumar, a resident of village Pipala in Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh was arrested from Noida on Thursday. The arrest was made under the supervision of DSP Naveenpal Singh Lehal (PPS), Special Crime Cell & Nodal Officer, PO Wing, and led by SI Balwinder Singh.
Lehal told The Indian Express it took the police over two and a half months of consistent surveillance and intelligence gathering to trace and arrest the fugitive. “Using both technical and human intelligence, we tracked his old connections and movements. Eventually, we discovered that Gaurav had been working for the past two and a half years in a large Noida housing society with over 500 homes,” he said.
“Initially hired as a security guard, he was later promoted to head of security and then to manager of the Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA). Shockingly, the RWA never conducted any background verification unaware that their manager was a wanted double murder accused.”
The police revealed that most residents in the society were elderly and retired individuals, who were left stunned upon learning the truth.
“In the past four months alone, we’ve tracked and arrested over 120 fugitives and murder accused. Our campaign against absconders and hardened criminals will continue. Those who run from justice will face the full force of law,” the DSP added.
A case against Gaurav was registered in a Mohali police station on September 23, 2017, under Sections 302, 411, 449, 465, 468, 471, and 201 of the IPC.
According to the investigation, on the night of September 22–23, 2017, Gaurav entered K J Singh’s house and murdered both him and his mother Gurcharan Kaur. Police said a heated argument had taken place earlier that day between the journalist and Gaurav in a nearby park, during which the former allegedly slapped him. Enraged, Gaurav bought a knife and killed both victims before fleeing the scene.
A few days later, Gaurav was caught driving Singh’s stolen Ford Ikon car, and police recovered a mobile phone, ATM card, TV, DVD player, and set-top box from his possession.
The Mohali court declared Gaurav a proclaimed offender in 2022 after he jumped bail and went into hiding.
Meanwhile, the senior journalist’s sister, when contacted said that she expressed relief at the arrest.
“We had almost lost hope of ever getting justice,” she said. “It was through you that we learned about this arrest. We are deeply thankful to the police for their commendable work. The man who took my brother and mother’s lives must now receive the punishment he deserves.”
