The arrest of an industrialist in the alleged suicide case of a farmer in Ludhiana triggered protest from both sides, Wednesday.

Tension gripped the Ludhiana Mini Secretariat after the hosiery industry unions came at loggerheads with farmer unions. While hosiery owners demanded immediate release of arrested industrialist Rajesh Jain, farmer unions also reached there demanding more stringent sections in the FIR.

AAP MLA Gurpreet Gogi also reached the spot and later held a meeting with Ludhiana police commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu along with representatives from hosiery units.

A farmer identified as Sukhwinder had allegedly died after consuming poisonous substance on August 11 and in the suicide note recovered by the police, he accused Ashwani Jain, his father Devraj of Mall Enclave and Rajesh Jain of Rishi Nagar for abetment. The victim’s brother Dildar Singh also filed a complaint stating the accused had taken illegal possession of their property in Jainpur village due to which he took the extreme step.

An FIR under section 306, 34 of IPC was registered against three accused at PAU police station. On Monday, activists from Bharatiya Kisan Union (Sidhupur) had staged protest outside CP office accusing police of inaction following which Jain was arrested.

However, hosiery owners and industrialist’s family claimed that he was wrongly arrested. MLA Gogi said that CP Sidhu was apprised of the entire matter and autopsy report of the victim will clarify cause of death. He said that CP Sidhu has assured fair probe in the matter.
