At least three men, including a former village sarpanch, were murdered in Punjab’s Ludhiana district in a span of about 48 hours, with two of the victims shot dead and the third allegedly hacked to death with sharp-edged weapons, police on Sunday said.

The latest incident took place in Lodhowal area where two unidentified motorcycle-borne men shot dead Navtej Singh alias Neetu, a former sarpanch of Manewal village, on Saturday evening. Police suspect a family land dispute was behind the killing and have booked seven people, including relatives of the deceased.

Navtej, in his sixties, was travelling alone in his SUV from Manewal to his residence in Krishna Nagar when the assailants intercepted him near the Punjab Agro farm around 7 pm and opened fire. He was taken to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Police sources said at least six rounds were fired at the spot, though it was yet to be established how many bullets struck Navtej.

“Prima facie, the deceased had a land dispute within the family,” ACP (West) Jatinderpal Singh said. Seven people have been booked in a murder case registered at Ladhowal police station on the statement of Navtej’s son, he said.
