Lt Gen Sanjiv Chachra assumes charge of Western Command

Lt Gen Sanjiv Chachra assumed charge as the Western Army Commander on Friday.

Lt Gen Sanjiv Chachra assumed charge as the Western Army Commander on Friday. He paid floral tribute to the martyrs at Veer Smriti ,the war memorial on his taking over the command at Chandimandir military station. A guard of honour was presented to him on his arrival. He is a second generation Rajput officer commissioned in the 17 RAJPUT in June 1974 and later commanded the 16 RAJPUT in counter insurgency operations in the North East.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy at Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy,Dehradun,the General Officer has had varied combat,staff and instructional experience. He is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College,Wellington where he later served as Directing Staff. He is qualified on Higher Command Course,Mhow (MP) and the National Defence College,New Delhi. In his formative years of service,he has also been an instructor at the National Defence Academy,Khadakwasla.

Lt Gen Sanjiv Chachra has seen active service on the Siachen Glacier,High Altitude in the North and North East. He was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) for commanding 16 RAJPUT in Counter Insurgency Operations in the North East. During command of a Frontline Mountain Division as a General Officer Commanding (GOC),he was awarded Ati Vishisth Seva Medal (AVSM) for outstanding leadership in maintaining peace and tranquillity along the Sino-Indian border in the North East.

He has also been a military observer at the United Nations Peace Keeping Mission in Namibia in 1989 and has represented the Indian Army and the Centre on official delegations to Pakistan,Russia,Egypt,Israel,Middle East,Sweden,Columbia,Venezuela,USA and Brazil.
