Construction work of the international airport terminal building here will start in about two months. Highly placed sources said that Airport Authority of India (AAI) has decided to award the tender to construct the building to Larsen and Toubro (L&T) as it is the lowest bidder. It had called for tenders and five companies were shortlisted some time back. On Monday the tenders were opened and after technical evaluation and checking of the financial bids of all the companies, the tender is likely to be awarded to L&T. The formal announcement will be made by AAI only after the board clears and approves the name of the firm. It will take a few days.

AAI Executive Director V K Malhotra told Newsline,“The tenders have been opened and within two months the construction work of the terminal building of the international airport will start.” Sources said that the terminal’s construction is expected to be completed by November 2014 and Rs 450 crore has been sanctioned for this. The bid has come for around Rs 315 crore and rest is on furnishing. It is estimated that passengers traffic will be 15 lakh till 2014 as at present it is 8 lakh from Chandigarh as per an AAI survey. The airport will be built in four phases and is a three-decade plan till 2050.

Punjab Principal Secretary (Civil Aviation) Viswajeet Khanna told Newsline,“The first phase construction is expected to be completed by November 2014. Punjab Agro and Punjab Warehousing Corporations are planning to take space at the cargo terminal for exports.”

The airport building will be a green building with solar panels on top and will be built in four phases. It will have three terminals and each terminal building will be a two-deck building, with departures from the upper level and arrivals at the ground level, the same as Indira Gandhi International Airport,Delhi.

In the first phase as per the capacity of the proposed airport, some 26 aircraft could be parked comfortably and the building will have four aerobridges and will be a complete glass structure supported by an iron and steel frame. Also a taxi way is already under construction as the runway is 9,000 feet long and in the second phase the runway will be extended to 10,500 feet.

Also there will be car parking for 700 vehicles and two parking lots of 350 vehicles each just opposite the main building. The airport will have three entrances — one each from Mohali,Zirakpur and Chandigarh. Also a metro station has been proposed at the airport. Sources said,a new ATC building and cargo terminal for shipping cargo will also come up.
