The Chandigarh police’s crime branch has busted three gangs, including the one comprising three women, allegedly involved in theft of gas cylinders in the city. Police also recovered 27 domestic gas cylinders from their possession.

The three arrested women were Anu,Sheela and Pushpa, all residents of Bhaskar Colony.

The other four arrested were identified as Jaswant alias Monu; Rajesh alias Ubbla, residents of Bhaskar Colony; Sunil Kumar alias Raju of Sector 24 and Rajiv Kumar of Sector 25.

Inspector Amanjot Singh of the crime branch said that the gang of ladies had a very peculiar modus operandi.

“Two of the ladies,Sheela and Anu used to roam in the area as ragpickers whereas under the cover of rag picking they used to identify those houses whose gas cylinders were lying outside. After identifying their target house during the daytime they used to return during the night, mostly between 2 am to 4 am and used to steal the gas cylinders. They used to sell these cylinders to Pushpa, one of their associates for Rs 1500 each and Pushpa used to sell these to people who did not have a legal consumer number for Rs 2200,” Singh said.

He said that the other two gangs also used to roam around the city and after finding the target house locked, they used to enter the house. On finding these gas cylinders in the courtyard they used to sell it to those who did not have a valid gas connection.

“ They used to buy the drugs from the money the get from selling these cylinders,” Singh said.

The Chandigarh police advised the residents not to keep their cylinders under the staircase or in the courtyards or corridors. Police has asked to keep them at safe places in their house to protect them from any sort of theft.
