At the function in Dhanas where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh handed over the keys of tenements to slum-dwellers,a saree,bought to be presented to Union Minister Girija Vyas,went missing along with some shawls.
The items were not found despite a search being launched at the venue. Days later,these were found at the Chandigarh Housing Board. The mystery over how the items disappeared and then re-appeared continues.
Disapproval<\b>
It seems the Chandigarh District Consumer Forum does not think highly of the services rendered by the post offices.
In a judgment where the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism and Corporation (IRCTC) was found deficient in services for not refunding the booking amount to a Mohali resident,the Forum disapprovingly observed “the opposite party (IRCTC) cannot behave like a post office” and slapped a penalty of Rs 10,000 on IRCTC.

From gifts to colourful flowers,all seem to be making their way to the new DPI (S)’s office these days. With him replacing his predecessor Upkar Singh,various teachers’ union have been visiting the office to welcome him. But,the “charitable” gestures have an agenda. With a tiff going on between the education department and the Independent School Association (ISA) over the reimbursement of pending EWS bills,the ISA president gave a unique suggestion to the Education Officer to join the finance ministry saying he could help the finance minister strengthen the ailing economy by reducing debts.
As against a bill of Rs 84 lakh claimed by the schools,the education department reimbursed only Rs 4 lakh. H S Mamik,ISA president,said it is such people who could reduce such a huge amount. “The education officer should use his skills to help the government lower down their debts instead of reducing our bills,” he quipped.
‘Good’ old days<\b>
Here is a testimony of how much some Punjab Police officers are fond of thrashing the accused and suspects to obtain the desired information. “I miss the good old days when a bit of thrashing and a few electric shocks were good enough to get the entire information from the accused. These days,we are not allowed to beat them and are forced to follow the rulebook,” a cop rued while discussing the issue with a fellow police official in the thana.

Scared of adverse reporting,a constable,who as usual was late in reaching a spot where a man had committed suicide,requested scribes to mention in their write ups that the police reached the spot in time. This is what he had to say,“Just write that the police rushed immediately to the spot. That is the main thing. Rest of the details are not so important.”

So confident was he about the fate of his petition that Haryana MLA Zile Ram Sharma did not even bother to file for anticipatory bail application in the Supreme Court. The reason being the apex court had rejected anticipatory bail application of co-accused O P Jain,also charged with abetment to suicide in the same case. Hence,Sharma decided not to take a chance in the apex court. Sharma,in fact had not sought pre arrest from the special CBI Court in Panchkula after the court dismissed Jain’s petition. It was only after the Punjab and Haryana High Court issued notices on Jain’s petition that Sharma moved the high court seeking relief. Much to the chagrin of both MLAs,the high court eventually dismissed their petitions. Finally,both MLAs surrendered last week.
