The trail of a stolen vehicle of the Punjab Police went from cold to steaming hot recently when the thief was discovered to be none other than a head constable of the force.

Two years ago,Head Constable Jasbir Singh — now posted in the Mohali Police Lines — stole a Maruti Gypsy belonging to the office of the then additional director general of police (law and order) Chander Shekhar.

Now the Director General of Police (Railway and Traffic),Chander Shekhar had no idea that his own staff was driving around in the vehicle more nearly two years.

The vehicle was parked in front of inspector G S Sanuari’s flat in Mohali’s Pancham Society on the evening of August 15,2008. Sanuari, who was the personal staff of Shekhar, was supposed to take the vehicle to his boss’s office that evening for official work.

When Sanuari came down,he found the vehicle missing. A case of theft was registered immediately at the Phase VIII police station in Mohali.

The state police launched a massive hunt but all efforts met a dead end till their suspicions that Singh could be involved was confirmed only recently.

The state police’s intelligence wing and the Mohali Police put two and two together when some of his colleagues reported that Singh was driving around in a similar vehicle.

Singh,on the other hand, also sensed that the police were on his trail. Fearing he might be caught,he abandoned the vehicle in Chandigarh’s Sector 20 last week. It was recovered and the case sealed against him.

Singh broke down under a thorough grilling and admitted he had stolen the car two years ago. The police arrested him and on Friday he was produced in the local Mohali court. He is in a day’s police remand.

Head constable Singh was three months ago posted among the personal staff of Mohali SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, but soon transferred as munshi to Zirakhpur police station and then to Police Lines after his colleagues complained of his rough behaviour with the public.
