Over 6,000 cases pertaining to traffic challans, motor accident claims, cheque bounce, crime against women and other petty offences were disposed off on Saturday at a quarterly Lok Adalat held in the Chandigarh district court in Sector 17.

Hundreds of litigants from various parts of the city, keen on settling petty disputes, had turned up to attend the Lok Adalat braving the scorching heat.

“We want settlement of cases, rather than dragging them on for months and years,” said Garg,a city resident accompanying his cousin to settle a traffic challan case.

The officials claim that over 15000 petty cases of the past three months were listed during the day long Lok Adalat.

“In twenty cases of Motor Accident Claim Tribunal (MACT),around Rs 22 lakh was awarded to families,” said an official.

The Lok Adalat also settled over 4500 cases of traffic challans and a fine of over Rs 4 lakh was recovered from offenders.

The official said that 500 cheque bounce cases were also settled.

The official said that the idea of the Lok Adalat was to make litigants arrive at a settlement through mutual understanding.

“Over 6000 petty cases were settled today and in the future,a similar Lok Adalat will be held in the district court premises,” he said.
