Thousands of traffic offenders,on Wednesday,were let off with petty penalties thanks to the Lok Adalat. Compared to what is slapped by the Chandigarh Police on account of traffic violations,the offenders had to shell out one-fourth in District Courts.
A special Lok Adalat for final disposal of traffic challans was held at District Court,Chandigarh,on Wednesday. As many as 2,316 cases of violations of traffic were disposed off at ten courts.
For using mobile phone,police fine is Rs 1,000,while the District Court fined a measley Rs 200. Similarly for not wearing a helmet,the court charged the offender Rs 100 while the police would have fined the offender about Rs 300. For not carrying a driving licence,the police and court charges are Rs 300 and Rs 150.
Speaking to Newsline,a 22-year-old college student who had been challaned last month for using a mobile while driving his motorbike said,I had to wait for more than an hour to pay the fine. But I managed to save a lot of money. It was better to wait than shell out a Rs 1,000.
The total money collected in the ten district courts on account of disposal of the challans was Rs 5,38,300.
The lok adalat was organised,on Wednesday,on account of National Legal Literacy Day.
