Patients, especially those in wheelchairs, and the elderly, Friday faced a lot of inconvenience as the PGI Administration suddenly shut down several lifts of the institute in different buildings like Research Block A and B, APC.

All four lifts of Research Block A were not operational, and there was no alternative, with the public and patients facing problems in approaching various labs, OPDs and offices.

Installation of new lifts has been pending for a couple of years now, and many lifts are more than two decades old in these buildings. As per a lift operator here, glitches have become frequent now.

According to an attendant at the Nehru Hospital, he had to use the ramp with his old father, as the lifts were not working.

As per an employee here, maintenance agencies had declared the lifts not fit for operations a long time ago, but the PGI administration did not take timely action, and no plan was made to replace the lifts, nor were any serious repair measures initiated.

As per the Superintending Hospital Engineer (SHE), PGI, 13 lifts were not working in the institute as of April 3, and eight lifts in the institute were shut down by the agency (OEM) for inspection and repair, as these lifts are old and under replacement.

Two lifts each of Research block A and B, two lifts of APC and two lifts of Nehru Hospital were started after necessary repairs at 7.10 am on Friday.
