Panic gripped the housing board colony at Dhanas as the residents woke up to find blood spots and pug marks of a full-grown leopard and some cubs in a lane on Sunday morning.
Ashok Kumar, a PGI employee, said, “My mother who woke up first noticed blood outside the house. She followed the marks and noticed that they were all across the lane.” The veranda, where his car was parked, also had blood.
The people were stunned to see blood. The police were called who then informed the Forest and Wildlife Department.
Chandigarh’s Chief Wildlife Warden Santosh Kumar said, “We visited the spot and found pug marks of a fully grown leopard and some cubs. It is hard to determine how many cubs there are.”
It is believed that the blood marks were of a dog which the leopard killed and took away.
The Forest Department wanted to lay a trap in the forest area behind the Marble Market at Dhanas, but could not do so because of the bad weather all day.
Kumar said that department officials were patrolling the area. Residents had been asked not to allow children to go out of houses after sunset.
“The leopard seems to have lost its way. It was spotted a week back as well in the same locality,” said the chief wildlife warden, adding that the animal might have come from Punjab side. The residents said that the leopard was first spotted by some women in a park a few
days back.
