Political leaders and former councillors have sharply reacted to Desh Raj’s arrest in a corruption case by the CBI.

Satya Pal Jain,National Incharge of the Legal and Legislative Cell of the BJP said,“The arrest of a senior police officer of UT Administration in a bribery case has once again exposed how deep the roots of corruption have gone in Chandigarh. If an SHO has to pay Rs 5 lakhs for getting his work done to his senior officers, one can imagine the horrible plight of a common man in the city. A very high level and fair enquiry should be conducted to find out whether this money was to travel to the higher levels also or not. The entire administrative system has gone corrupt in Chandigarh. Serious allegations of corruption have been continuously levelled against both the political rulers as well as the senior officers”.

He added,“UT Administrator Shivraj Patil should come out of Raj Bhawan and reach out to the masses to know how the common man is being harassed, humiliated and mentally tortured by his bureaucrats”.

On the other hand,Chander Mukhi Sharma, former councillor, said,“Rather than appreciating the work done by CBI, the IG should take moral responsibility for the incident. The officers of the police are arm-twisting their subordinates to extort money from them. The condition of the public would be even more pitiable. There is complete anarchy in the system and the city is heading towards collapse. There should have been some mechanism to check the functioning of the police to prevent such a situation”.
