The Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association has decided to abstain from work on February 24 to protest against the proposed Advocates (Amendment) Act, 2025. The decision was taken unanimously by the association’s executive committee on February 21.

Acting president Jasdev Singh Brar and honorary secretary Swarn Singh Tiwana said the move was a mark of “strong dissatisfaction” with the Bill, which they believe contains provisions detrimental to advocates and the judiciary.

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has already filed objections to the Bill, which was made public on February 13 for comments. The BCI has expressed “profound concerns,” saying certain provisions, if enacted, would have serious implications for the legal profession and undermine its autonomy.
