Lawrence Bishnoi’s nephew claims he shot Moosewala; SIT says can’t confirm or deny

Sachin Thapan Bishnoi, who claims that Bishnoi is his  maternal uncle, told news channel News-18 that Moosewala was killed because he “financially supported and arranged for the shelter” of gangsters who killed Vicky Middukhera.

Amid reports that gangster Lawrence Bishnoi has told investigators that his gang’s members, including Canada-based Goldy Brar, hatched a conspiracy and murdered Sidhu Moosewala, a person claiming to be his cousin has claimed to have killed the singer-politician with “his own hands”.

Sachin Thapan Bishnoi, who claims that Bishnoi is his  maternal uncle and that they are from the same village in Punjab’s Fazilka district, told news channel News-18 that Moosewala was not killed for any “publicity stunt” or for “ransom”, but because he “financially supported and arranged for the shelter” of gangsters who killed Vicky Middukhera, a Youth Akali Dal leader.

Vikramjit Singh aka Vicky Middukhera, a native of Middukhera village in Bathinda, was shot dead on August 7 last year in a parking lot in Mohali. He had supported Bishnoi when the latter contested the student union election as a leader of the Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) at DAV College in Sector 10.

In the purported conversation with the news channel, Thapan said Moosewala’s name had “come up” in the Middukhera case, but the police did not take any action and “that is why we killed him”. He said Bishnoi was a “follower of Bajrang Bali and was an icon for the whole nation, not only for us”.

“There is no personal grudge. We are just avenging (the killings of our brothers),” said Thapan, adding “We don’t repent what we did…and (we) are ready for any sacrifice”. News Agency PTI reported that Bishnoi, who was interrogated by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell, too has alleged that Moosewala was involved in the killing Middukhera, which led to a “rivalry” between him and the Punjabi singer.

Moosewala was shot dead by some unidentified assailants in Punjab’s Mansa district on May 29, a day after the state government curtailed his security cover and made the news public.

A Delhi Police official, said “Bishnoi has been very uncooperative so far, but during interrogation, he accepted that he had a rivalry with Moosewala and claimed that his gang members killed the singer”. “He has revealed that Goldy Brar was one of the gang members who conspired and executed the killing of Moosewala but has not yet disclosed the names of other associates who were the real conspirators and executioners of the killing,” the official told PTI.

The official said, “Bishnoi has not disclosed the exact motive behind executing the killing and has been uncooperative about revealing other details about the murder.”

Thapan, meanwhile, claimed that “Moosewala was also involved in the murder of Goldy Brar’s cousin”.

In a Facebook post, Goldy Brar had claimed responsibility for plotting Moosewala’s murder. Brar’s cousin Gurlal Brar, a close aide of Bishnoi, was murdered in Chandigarh’s industrial area in July last year. Bishnoi’s gang had allegedly murdered Youth Congress leader Gurlal Pahalwan in Faridkot to avenge his death. Goldy Brar was the prime suspect in the murder. He reportedly fled to Canada in 2021.

Thapan further claimed that “we have already killed several persons involved” in the murder of Brar’s cousin and “will get the remaining also killed”. He also said that their gang had sophisticated weapons like the ones seen in “Hollywood films”.

In a reference to the rival Davinder Bambiha gang, Thapan said, “They issued a threat to kill (Punjabi singer) Mankirt Aulakh. They don’t have such level”.

Following Moosewala’s murder, Aulakh had demanded security from Punjab Police stating that he had received threats from the Bambiha gang.

In 2014, Aulakh had performed a show at the Ropar jail where he referred to Bishnoi as his “brother” and prayed for his early release.

A member of the Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the Punjab government to probe Moosewala’s murder, said, “We are looking into the purported remarks made by Sachin Thapan Bishnoi. We neither confirm nor deny the remarks. But, yes, he is a suspect.”

Bishnoi, who is facing nearly 60 cases, is lodged in Central Jail number eight of Tihar.

Gangster Kala Jathedi and his aide Kala Rana, who were in police custody in a different case, were also questioned in connection with the killing of Moosewala.

According to officials, after questioning Bishnoi in Tihar prison, he was produced at the Patiala House court and was remanded in three days police custody for questioning in connection with the case where three criminals were arrested after a brief encounter with the Delhi Police Special Cell’s unit last month.

During interrogation, the arrested criminals had disclosed that the weapons recovered from them were supplied by Bishnoi, a senior police official said.
