Lawrence Bishnoi, a former student of DAV College, Sector 10, and an accused in an attempt to murder case, was not produced in the court, for the fourth time, during the resumed hearing on Wednesday.
In the last hearing, the court of additional district and sessions judge, SK Sachdeva, had directed the superintendent of jail, Faridkot, to produce Bishnoi before the court on Wednesday. The court has adjourned the matter to May 24.
The court had earlier issued production warrants for Bishnoi. However, it was informed that the accused has been shifted to Faridkot Jail.
In November 2015, the court had observed that Bishnoi and his accomplice, Monty Shah, that the jail authorities have repeatedly failed to produce the accused before it.
Therefore, the court directed to take the case proceedings forward by producing the accused through videoconferencing. The evidence of the case was completed through videoconferencing.
Police are avoiding to produce the accused, since he had escaped from their custody while he was produced in a Mohali court in January 2015. The police also apprehended that Bishnoi and the complainant in the case, Rajat Sharma, might turn violent when the two will be produced in the court at the same time.
In 2015, the police had deployed more than 30 personnel to maintain the law and order situation.
Sharma, who is also an accused in a murder case, is in the custody of Mohali police. He is one of the nine accused involved in the murder of an advocate in 2013.
Bishnoi, a former leader of SOPU, has been involved in cases of carjacking and extortion in his hometown, Ferozepur.
