A day after the police,in a case of mistaken identity, named Congress MLA from Bholath,Sukhpal Singh Khaira as the intended recipient of Rs 3.64 crore that it seized from four persons, the leader and his supporters gheraoed the office of Rajpura Superintendent of Police Manmohan Sharma and anti-government slogans. He also accused the state government of engineering a conspiracy to tarnish his image.
Khaira had reached the SPs office to seek an explanation as to why his name was linked in the case in which Patiala police had arrested six persons, including two drivers, from two vehicles and had seized Rs 3.94 crore allegedly mean for a land deal.
The SP had no answer. He passed the buck to a property dealer Bhim Sen, Khaira said, adding that SP failed to confirm the details before naming him (Khaira) in the case.
Mine is an NRI constituency. My image has been tarnished. Too much damage has been caused to my reputation world over due to this episode. I will file a defamation suit against Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal,Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, former SGPC chief Jagir Kaur,PTC channel and SP Manmohan Sharma, Khaira said, alleging that the Akali Dal had engineered the conspiracy and the SP was only a small player in whole episode.
They have targeted me because I had been vocal in criticising their (Akali-BJP ruling combine) functioning, Khaira said, adding that the presence of Jagir Kaur in Patiala on Friday indicates that she is also involved in the conspiracy.
Meanwhile,Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal who was in Rakhra village in Patiala district today said,Khaira has not been named in the case at my behest. He said that Police had named Khaira in the case and investigations are on. I can only ensure that no injustice would be done to anyone,CM added.
While Rajpura SP did not answer the calls made to him,Patiala SSP Gurpreet Singh Gill said the investigations were on and things would be clear in a day or two.
Notably, the seized money was meant for one Sukhpal Singh and couple of others for a piece of land at Bhawanigarh. Rajpura SP had attributed the money to Khaira on the basis of the statement of a property dealer involved in the deal. After the matter snowballed into a major controversy,a scrutiny of land papers revealed that the fathers name of Sukhpal Singh mentioned in the papers was different to that of Bolath MLAs father.
