Anushka Yadav, daughter of former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, is busycampaigning for Congress candidate from Rewari, her father-in-law Haryana Irrigation Minister Captain AjaySingh Yadav — who is a known Hooda detractor. She came to Rewari more than a year ago after getting married to Chiranjeev Yadav.

A student of law, Anushka is looked at with curiosity by the people. But she seems to fit right in as she goes about the town seeking votes for her father- in-law.

“I never campaigned for my father. But things here are different. Women are more open. Not that we were prohibited from campaigning, but there never seemed the need to do so,” she told The Indian Express.

According to her husband Chiranjeev, “She proved to be a big asset. The people easily struck an emotional cord with her.” While Captain Yadav has been elected legislator from this constituency for the last five consecutive terms and her husband is president of thestate Youth Congress, she has the added advantage of Lalu Yadav’s daughter. Captain Yadav’s supporters know this and introduce
her as Lalu’s daughter. “Yes this true. Those who accompany me introduce me as Lalu Yadav’s daughter. People want to spend more time with me. They ask me about my father and ask me to visit them again,” said Anushka.

But for Anushka, who has completed an interior designing course too, the campaign issimilar to coming up with new designs each day. “You never know how people react to your presence. The first time I approached a couple, I was given shagun. Despite resisting, they gave me some money. I was embarrassed, but it happened again. People have their own way of showing affection,” she laughed. On a lighter note, Anushka said that she ensures she starts her campaign on an empty stomach. “Everybody likes me to have something at their house. By evening it becomes impossible to have a bite. I try to finish my campaign early as I have a small daughter to take care of. This also the reason why my campaign focuses on the township only.”

Anushka, who looks up to her father for advice, said, “Bihar is a differently run state. My father would spend most of his time in the rural areas canvassing for the party. But here towns are equally important, especially because this one is in the neighbourhood of Delhi.” Wrapping up her campaign, she admitted, “It seems good. I am enjoying the new innings of my life but I don’t know what result my efforts will yield.”
