Two more names including Lalit Joshi and Pardeep Chhabra have been added to the list for Congress’ next head for Chandigarh Unit.
After victory in the Mayoral elections, the Congress has accelerated the process to find new face for city president’s post, who will replace incumbent B B Bahl who has been serving as local party president since 2001 but has recently shown his inability to continue due to age factor and health reasons.
Earlier, Pawan Sharma along with Ravinder Pal Singh and HS Lucky were few names being discussed at various levels of party forum.
However, sources said that the senior leaders of the party in Delhi are also contemplating on Lalit Joshi and Pardeep Chhabra for the next city president of the party.
Lalit Sharma was the first full time mayor of the congress party back in 2002 and since then congress has as many as 14 mayors.
On the other hand, Pardeep Chhabra remained city’s mayor in 2008. Also the current party spokesperson for local unit, Pardeep too played a crucial role in party’s recent victory in Mayoral election along with other party colleagues in which the party won the post of mayor as well deputy mayor despite adverse circumstances.
Sources said that the announcement of new local president is expecting soon and the next target of the party is to continue the winning momentum in Mayoral elections till the time municipal elections are held in Chandigarh, which is due in December, 2016 and eye for next Lok Sabha election with strong cadre.
When contacted, Former MP Pawan Kumar Bansal said that the process of selecting new party president for city has already begun. “My views were also asked by the party high command last week and I duly put forward my views, he said.
Party’s convener for Chandigarh Shakeel Ahmad said that new president would be announced soon but views of the current city president B B Bahl and Pawan Bansal would matter as they both are senior leaders of the party and have lot of experience.
Meanwhile, party observers said that the recent victory of the party in Mayoral elections have revived Bansal’s influence. This development is important since former Union Minister Manish Tiwari is also trying to increase his local presence and also tried his luck to contest the Lok Sabha election from the city.
Sources said that he was also trying to push his own confident Chander Mukhi for the post and whether he manages to cast his influence is to seen in days to come.
A senior leader of the party however said that everyone has their right to push for their name but final decision would be in the hands of the central leadership, which would soon make their decision public.
