Tourism projects in the city were reviewed by the Additional Secretary (Tourism),Sanjay Kothari who was in the city on Monday. He visited sites of a few projects where money had been sanctioned by the Ministry of Tourism. A meeting of the officials was also held.
Kothari saw the progress at the Valley of Animals,Sector 49 as well as the construction at the regulator end of the Sukhna Lake. Kothari expressed concern at the drying up of the Lake which is almost dry leaving apart a few wet patches. Boating in the Lake has been stopped owing to the low water levels.
A number of theme-based gardens had been approved by the Tourism Department in different sectors in the city. Apart from the Valley of Animals that is set to open in August,there is not much progress at the other sites. These include the Palm Garden and the Garden of Conifers.
A presentation was made pertaining to the multilevel parking lot that is proposed to come up at Sector 17. The MC has sought a grant of Rs 5 crore for the project. The parking lot will have a capacity for around 900 cars and will have a three-storey basement. The proposal for construction of the lot was approved recently by the civic body. Tenders for the project have been invited and are to be opened this week.
The proposal for installation of a lazer show-cum-musical fountain was also shown to Kothari. The fountain had invited controversy after some councillors complained of the expenses. The proposal had initially been mooted by the tourism department.
