MOHALI POLICE, investigating the twin murder of senior journalist K J Singh and his mother Gurcharan Kaur, suspect that the person who orchestrated the crime was “well known” to the victims. Investigations have also revealed that KJ was the prime target and Gurcharan Kaur was possibly killed because she also recognised one of the assailants.
The Special Investigation Team suspects that a family insider may hold the key to the crime.
KJ Singh and his mother Gurcharan Kaur’s bhog ceremony is scheduled for Thursday. The SIT is likely to question some of their close relatives after that. For the last three days, SIT has questioned KJ’s close relatives and a few former colleagues. A few others were also questioned on Wednesday. SIT has already ruled out robbery as the motive behind the killings.
Sources said the police were also probing the gruesome killing as “crime of passion”.
“What also raises eyebrows is why of all the expensive articles – a gold chain that he was wearing, cameras, laptops, his wallet – lying at KJ’s residence at the time of the crime, the assailants chose to decamp with a television screen,” a senior police officertold Chandigarh Newsline.
Police officers told Chandigarh Newsline that they were also probing the case from the possibility of a “contract killing”.
“We can say that we are close to cracking this case, but cannot reveal anything more now,” said Mohali SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal.
