Taking note of the gravity of offence,police charged a Mohali resident for culpable homicide in a hit and run case in which Gehna,a three-year-old girl,was killed on Monday in Sector 38. The accused,identified as Sandeep Singh (28),is a resident of Mohali Sector 70.
Sandeep had returned from Australia around four months back after spending three years there. He was staying with his wife,mother and daughter at their house in Mohali. His brother stays in England. On Monday,he had come to Sector 38 with a friend who had also returned from abroad a few months back.
He had fled from the spot after the accident. Today,he was arrested from his house in Mohali. He was traced from the registration number on his car.
Charanjit Singh,Station House Officer(SHO),said,We have booked the accused on charges of culpable homicide on the basis of the statement of Mukesh,an eyewitness. Mukesh had told us that the accused had apologised to him after his car passed dangerously close to him. Sandeep had folded his hands and told Mukesh that he was under some influence.
He added that they had sent blood and urine samples of the accused for medical examination to determine if he had taken any drugs when the accident had taken place.
On Monday,Gehna,a Sector 38 resident,was hit by Sandeeps car when she had come to buy chocolate to the market near her house. She was taken from one hospital to another and was finally declared dead by PGI doctors.
The accused will be produced in a local court on Wednesday.
