Recalling her student days at Panjab University’s Department of Indian Theatre, city MP Kirron Kher on Thursday inaugurated a three-day national theatre conference at PU.
During her first visit to the department after being elected as the MP, Kher also remembered noted theatre director, novelist and founder-director of the separtment, Balwant Gargi, and other teachers. She also narrated her selection for the first play at the university.
While presiding over the function, PU Vice-Chancellor Professor A K Grover appreciated the efforts of the department in organising the conference. PU Dean University Instructions (DUI), Professor A K Bhandari, PU Registrar Col G S Chadha (Retd), Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW) Professor Navdeep Goyal, DSW (Woman) Professor Nandita, and convener of the conference, Dr Navdeep Kaur, also participated in the inaugural function.
The conference will witness performances by folk theatre artistes of Himachal, Haryana and Punjab. Actor and comedian Rana Ranbir, and Punjabi singer and comedian Karamjit Anmol will grace the event.
The folk theatre performances will be held in collaboration with the North Zone Cultural Centre (NZCC), informed Rajinder Singh Gill, Director, NZCC, at a press conference held on Thursday at the Department of Theatre, PU.
The morning sessions will include lectures by Professor Balbir Kaur, eminent theatre personality, Professor Bharat Ratan Bhargav, ex-producer (Hindi) BBC; Professor Radha Vallabh Tripathi, former vice-chancellor of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Dr H S Gour University, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth; and Suman Kumar Jha, Deputy Secretary (Drama), Sangeet Natak Academy.
