As Kavita, who was ordered by a Khap panchayat to leave her in-laws’ house as she had married into the same gotra, returned to her home in Meham after a fortnight of exile Monday night, the police stepped up their drive to arrest those members of the Benewal Khap of Kehri Meham village who had given the decision. They had also declared the couple as sister and brother on January 30. Meham police station SHO Kartar Singh Dahia said the police were trying to nab the panchayat members and raided their suspected hideouts late last night. Noting that Kavita did not face any social boycott after her arrival in Meham,he said the police were monitoring the situation closely so that the couple could live peacefully and without any interference by representatives of the Khap panchayat. He warned that any social boycott or threat to the couple’s life will not be tolerated.
