Slamming state Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh for creating a “new brand of Congress with a five-star culture”,former Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Virendra Kataria on Wednesday said that the writing on the wall was that the party needed a change.

In a press statement welcoming the appointment of Abohar MLA Sunil Jakhar as the CLP leader,Kataria appreciated Jakhar’s comment that Congress’ defeat requires serious introspection and the party should not satisfy itself with merely citing money and liquor as reasons for its poor performance in the Assembly polls.

However, targetting Amarinder for the party’s defeat in Punjab Vidhan Sabha polls,Kataria said: “It is a strange logic that Maharaja Amarinder Singh can give his own reasons for defeat in the media, but will not allow even a request to call a meeting of the Punjab Pradesh Congress to discuss collectively the reasons for our defeat. Introspection can be done only in a party meeting. You cannot escape the discussion of personal lapses, which have immensely contributed to our defeat,of any leader how big he may be.”

He added: “I don’t know what type of feedback Amarinder gives to the party high command. I also do not understand the feedback he gets which makes him say that we were winning 80 seats. If we want to withstand our political ground,we must read the writing on the wall, which says — a change.”
