The Indian Railway has decided to ensure a safer and more comfortable ride to passengers as the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala has received an order to manufacture 693 Linke Hoffman Busch (LHB) coaches. LHB coaches offer better safety and do not overturn in case of a head-on collision, said railway officials. RCF had manufactured 300 LHB coaches in the last financial year.
Sources at RCF said that the production of coaches had not exceeded 100 in the past three years, but the big orders from the railways speaks the intentions of the authorities towards a safer journey.
LHD coaches have superior features compared to conventional ones: They are more durable, have better safety standards, about 10-12 per cent more carrying capacity, high speed potential, superior riding comfort, aesthetic interiors and lower maintenance.
A senior RCF officer and secretary to the RCF general manager,Rajneesh Bansal said that earlier such coaches used to be fitted only in Rajdhani,Shatabdi and Duronto trains,…but with the increased manufacturing these coaches can now be used in Express and mail trains.
Sources said that LHB coaches cost around Rs 75 lakh to Rs 1 crore less than manufacturing a conventional coach,…this difference will reduce considerably with the bigger orders.
LHB coaches were initially introduced in New Delhi-Lucknow Shatabdi Express and subsequently in other Shatabdi and Rajdhani services. The Indian Railways is planning to replace conventional coaches with the new LHB coaches gradually, said RCF sources.
