The Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) on Thursday called independent councillor Kamaldeep Karwal a ‘criminal’ and said that someone is influencing the police from arresting him.
Karwal was recently welcomed in to the Akali Dal by Sukhbir Badal. He faces attempt to murder charges, along with Independent MLA Simarjit Singh Bains, for thrashing tehsildar G S Benipal in 2009. He allegedly used derogatory language against SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar when they were at the Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana. Makkar is also president of the college.
Makkar, known to be a supporter of the Badals, condemned Karwal’s entry to the Akali Dal.
“I have apprised chief minister Parkash Singh Badal of the situation. How can someone like Karwal, who is a criminal and out on bail in an attempt to murder case create hooliganism in my college and abuse me. He not only abused me but the SGPC as whole which is the highest body of Sikh panth,” Makkar told The Indian Express.
“Someone from within Akali Dal is protecting him and thus police is not registering FIR despite the fact that we submitted a complaint. The police is dilly dallying the matter for the sake of it. He came with his niece asking us to recruit her. She was not even qualified for the post,” said Makkar.
“Everyone present there is eye witness to the fact that Karwal and his accomplice Jindu not only abused me but SGPC as well. If police is not registering our FIR despite proof, then it is shameful,” said Makkar.
Balwinder Singh Jindu allegedly sent a WhatsApp message (on August 2) calling Makkar ‘a drunk and womanizer who insulted Karwal in college’. He was booked for cyber crime at SBS Nagar police station.
Sources from Akali Dal confirmed that senior leader Maheshinder Singh Grewal, who convinced Sukhbir Badal to welcome Karwal – favours Karwal. Speaking to The Indian Express, Karwal said, “I am not answerable to Makkar in any way and I did not abuse him or SGPC. I am answerable to Sukhbir Badal only.”
Sources confirmed that CM Badal – on Makkar’s insistence – called Ludhiana police commissioner Pramod Ban to inquire into the matter at the earliest but he was transferred on Wednesday.
Rajesh Thakur, SHO Daba police, said, “Statements are being recorded of the witnesses and we are yet to check CCTV clipping in which Makkar is claiming that Karwal abused him and SGPC. Karwal is denying that he abused Makkar or SGPC. CCTV footage will present the facts and FIR will be done then.”
