As many as 1,500 students of the Chandigarh Group of Colleges,Landran who were conferred degrees during the institutes ninth convocation received the convocation address from former President APJ Abdul Kalam.
Dr Kalam encouraged the students to focus on new projects involving innovation and higher organisational responsibilites.
Quoting instances from his personal experience,the renowned scientist asked students to get ready to acquire knowledge in an integrated way for using multiple disciplines. He further highlighted the need for realisation of a system development,integration and management.
Citing the example of the Delhi Metro Rail Project (DMRP),Dr Kalam said that the project has given India the potential of executing a fast transportation system using high technology and reliability in a time-bound manner. The Delhi Metro Rail Project has brought to the nation the most advanced rail technology. The sophisticated coach technology which was unavailable in India earlier has been transferred to the Bharat Earth Movers Limited,Bangalore which has now enabled it to assemble these trains with progressive indigenization, Dr Kalam elaborated.
While emphasising on the need for development of creative leadership skills among students,Dr Kalam was of the view that the need of the hour was to deliver quality education through integrated projects so that students can learn to take up more than one responsibility. The management of the DMRP has set an example of a dedicated and transparent leadership under Managing Director,E Sreedharan, he added.
Suggesting the implementation of the PURA (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas) concept in Mohali,he said that the potential of the youth of CGC Landran can be used to bring such a complex in the area covering around 100 villages on the outskirts of the city. Dr Kalam also gifted a copy of his book Target 3 Billion to the library of the institution.
The toppers and merit holders among the students were handed over their degrees by Dr Kalam. It was the best moment of my life. We could not have received our degree from a better personality, said one of the toppers in M Tech.
