Jigmet delivered when it mattered the most as he netted a brilliant hattrick to help Shishu Niketan School,Sector 22,beat Saupin’s School,Sector 32,Chandigarh,3-1,in a lop-sided quarter-final encounter to enter the semi-finals of the Chandigarh Junior football tournament for Pt Harbans Lal Memorial,at Sector 17 Stadium on Wednesday. After Robin Chhetri of DAV-8,who came up with the first hattrick of the tournament,Jigmet is the second player to achieve the feat.
After some impressive performances in the tournament,Shishu Niketan players came into the match with their confidence sky high. Jigmet gave them the perfect start by opening the account in the tenth minute of the match. The lanky striker was in marauding mood and kept the Saupin’s defenders on their toes with his explosive skills and brilliant run into the opposition territory.
He finally got his second goal of the match in the 23rd minute as he curled the ball past the diving Saupin’s keeper to double the team’s lead. Saupin’s forwards failed to rise up to the occasion and were kept at bay by the Shishu Niketan defenders. On the other hand,Jigmet’s purple patch in front of the goal continued as he completed his hattrick with a superb goal in the 40th minute of the match. Kanwar pulled back one for Saupin’s by scoring in the 48th minute of the match but his goal came too late for the team.
Meanwhile,heavyweights St Stephen’s School,Sector 45,Chandigarh,bowed out of the tournament following a shock 0-2 defeat at the hands of St Soldier’s School,Sector 28. Konchok put St Soldier’s-28 ahead with a superb finish in the 10th minute. Konchok collected a brilliant pass from Gurjinder and after dribbling past several St Stephen’s-45 defenders,put the ball at the back of the net. Gurjinderjit then doubled the lead with a solo effort in the 18th minute.
In the third quarter-final match,DAV School,Sector 8,proved too strong for Mount Carmel School,Sector 47,and were comprehensively beaten 3-0. Robin got DAV-8 off to a perfect start when he scored in the very first minute of the match. It was Rahul who started the move and dribbled past several Mount Carmel defenders before passing the ball to Robin who shot the ball into the far corner of the net.
Rahul also put his name on the scoresheet when found the back of the net in the eighth minute of the match. He was also involved in the third goal for his team when he passed the ball to Darban who found the net in the 40th minute of the match.
In the last match of the day,Government Model Senior Secondary School,Sector 22,got the better of St Kabir School,Sector 26,Chandigarh 5-4 in the tie-breaker after the match ended at 1-1. Jai Prakash put GMSSS-22 ahead in the fifth minute of the match. However,Arjit found the equaliser for St Kabir in the 29th minute as the match ended in a draw after both the teams failed to find the back of the net.
