A day after Chandigarh BSP councillor Jannat Jahan alleged that she was sexually harassed by four youths in a hotel, the Panchkula police said that it was likely that Jannat’s husband Hafiz Anwar-ul-Haq had initially passed remarks at the girl accompanying the youths, following which they had intervened.
Jannat has levelled allegations against Kalka MLA Latika Sharma’s nephew, Vikram, her son, and two others.
The incident was reported on Thursday night when Jahan had gone to the hotel in Sector 5 with her family. She told the police that when she was about to leave around 12.15 am, four youths passed remarks at her. When she retorted, one of them misbehaved with her. “They hit me on my arm with the butt of a pistol,” she had said.
Her complaint was followed by a counter-complaint from a Zirakpur-based girl who was accompanying the youths and who has made similar allegations against Jahan’s husband. Both the parties were summoned by the police Saturday to verify the allegations.
“Both the parties have given conflicting versions about the incident. While the youth wanted to defuse the tension, Jannat was adamant on seeking police action. We have, however, found substance in the girl’s complaint, who has alleged that Hafiz outraged her modesty by passing remarks at her in an inebriated state, following which the youths intervened. This has been confirmed by hotel officials and eyewitnesses,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Dalip Kumar.
He added, “Hafiz refused to undergo a medical examination. Jannat, however, again submitted a complaint today. The matter requires further investigation.” According to the police, even Jannat was drunk when the incident happened.
A CCTV footage has been made available to the police. It is, however, not of the sixth floor of the hotel where the incident occurred, as according to the hotel officials, the “cameras had been sent for repair”.
“I came to know about the identity of the youth when Sharma met me last evening at city BJP president Sanjay Tandon’s residence. She apologised to me about the incident and asked me not to file any complaint,” said Jahan.
When questioned about the meeting, Sharma, however, denied the allegations. “We are part of a common social and political circle, and such meetings often take place. Her statements are unnecessary, and I have not made any requests or apologies to her. Koi kuch bhi keh kahega, to hum kaise maan lenge ? (Anyone can say anything. How can we believe that)?,” said Sharma.
When questioned about the alleged involvement of her son, Sharma said, “If she has made the complaint, then let her go ahead with it. The police will investigate the matter.”
Jannat has also met Punjab and Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki regarding the complaint. “He has assured me of suitable action by the police,” she said.
Sanjay Tandon said, “I got a call from Jannat after she had got her medical examination done. Both Jannat and her husband came to my residence to discuss the matter. As they wanted to confront Latika, I called her to my residence. Nobody is pressuring her. She is not a kid.”
