Jalandhar teachers stage dharna,go on mass leave

The protest call given by the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union saw the non-government college teachers from Jalandhar district stage a dharna on Monday outside the office of Director Public Instructions (Colleges) Punjab.

The protest call given by the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) saw the non-government college teachers from Jalandhar district stage a dharna on Monday outside the office of Director Public Instructions (Colleges) Punjab. The teachers from Jalandhar also proceeded on mass casual leave.

General Secretary,PCCTU,Dr Jagwant Singh spelled out the demands of the agitating teachers: the government should implement the notification of the UGC (dated October 19,2006) regarding Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) for DPE’s /Librarians,extend the date of relaxation for refresher courses as recommended by the UGC,HRA for rural colleges and amend security of Service Act to include unaided posts within its preview as promised by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal among others.

PCCTU president Dr I S Sandhu appealed to the chief minister of Punjab to intervene for the implementation of the new UGC pay scales notification issued by the Centre on December 31,2008.

PCCTU Adviser Dr R B Singh alleged that the government is forcing teachers to go on an agitation at the peak of the session. The college teachers from Patiala are likely to proceed on mass casual leave on Tuesday.
