Raising an eyebrow on the investigation carried out by the police in Jalandhar in an alleged land grabbing case, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday asked the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. Justice Surya Kant passed the order on a petition filed by one Shiv Nath Singh alias Shibu,an NRI,who has alleged the presence of politically-connected land mafia in Jalandhar and had sought a CBI probe into the case.
The petitioner has levelled serious allegations to draw an inference that there exists a land mafia actively indulging in grabbing the properties, said the order.
Justice Kant also lashed out at the local police stating that their functioning has come under clouds. It is alleged that despite preventive orders passed by this court, the violence is going on unabated. It leaves an impression as if the local police is either a silent spectator or has succumbed to extraneous pressures by allowing the miscreants to go on a free run and take law into their hands. Unless the noose is tightened firmly they are likely to be a big threat to the peaceful civic society, especially in the backdrop of the alleged political patronage enjoyed upon by them, said Justice Kant.
The Court had insisted on handing over the case to CBI but Punjab law officer insisted that there are several Punjab Police officers who have no local roots or considerations and are capable enough to take the investigation to its logical conclusion in a most fair, impartial and dispassionate manner. The SIT has been asked to take over the probe within three days and submit the report within three months. The court has directed SSP (Chandigarh) to provide protection to the petitioner if he shifts from Jalandhar to Chandigarh.
