Jalandhar in good position against Chandigarh

Riding high on half-centuries each by Himanshu Satyawan (78 not out),Taruwar Kohli (67) and Anmol Luthar (56),Jalandhar finished the first day of the Punjab Inter-District cricket match for Katoch Sheild against Chandigarh on a high note,at the FC Sondhi cricket ground in Jalandhar on Saturday.

After winning the toss,the Jalandhar team decided to bat first and Mandeep Singh Junior and Anmol Luthar opened the innings. Chandigarh medium-pacer Jaskaran Singh met with early success when he removed the in-form Mandeep for just two runs. Mandeep was trapped in front by Jaskaran.

At this stage skipper Taruwar Kohli stepped on to the cricket field and joined Anmol Luthar. Together they stitched a 125-run partnership for the second-wicket before Jaskaran Singh returned to clean up Taruwar Kohli who had scored a sedate 67 off 147 balls. Medium-pacer Jaskaran Singh was in full flow at this stage of the match. He then struck two quick blows to Jalandhar by cleaning up Bhupinder Singh (7) and opener Anmol Luthar (56).

This was the last success which came Chandigarh’s way. Thereafter,Jalandhar batsmen- Himanshu Satyawan and Abhishek Gupta- got their act together to post an unbeaten stand of 138 runs for the fifth-wicket to take their team’s total to 278 for 4 in 90 overs at close of first day’s play.

Himanshu Satyawan struck an unbeaten (78) while wicket-keeper Abhishek Gupta was undefeated on 52. For Chandigarh,Jaskaran Singh (4 for 55) was the most successful bowler whereas India-A star quickie Siddharth Kaul bowled an economical spell of 19 overs for 36 runs but could not take any wicket.

Patiala in driver’s seat

In the match being played at Dhruv Pandove Stadium in Patiala,the hosts were in a commanding position at close of first day’s play as they dismissed Amritsar for a paltry 184 in 75 overs. Amritsar,who opted to bat first,lost their in-form opener Rohan Marwaha when he was castled by left-arm spinner Rajwinder Singh for five runs,with the team’s total reading 18 for one.

Then Karan Sharma and Abhinav Sharma added 36 runs for the second-wicket before Karan Sharma was removed by Mohit Mohindra for 47 runs off 60 balls. Patiala spinners,Rajwinder Singh and Sarabjit Singh Ladda,bowled in tandem and spun a web around the Amritsar batsmen.

Sharad Lumba (28) Aman Bawa (21) Mohit Handa (36) and Charanjit Singh (21) were the only Amritsar batsmen to show some resistance.

For Patiala,left-arm spinner Rajwinder Singh (4 for 58),right-arm leg spinner Sarabjit Ladda (3 for 66) and medium-pacer Mohit Mohindra (2 for 32) were the main wicket takers.

In reply,Patiala opened with Ravi Inder Singh and Jeevanjot Singh. The duo put on 31 runs in 13 overs without being separated. Jeevanjot was batting on seven while Ravi Inder Singh was unbeaten on 20 at the end of day’s play.
