The Chandigarh administration will seek financial assistance from the Centre for hosting the second International Yoga Day in Chandigarh on June 21, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also take part.
The administration has limited funds at its disposal to splurge on the mega event. For the current financial year, the central government sanctioned only Rs 700 crore under plan head and Rs 2,834 crore under non-plan head. The administration had to pay for under utilisation of funds during the last financial year.
Officials from the ministry of AYUSH will visit the city next week to hold a meeting with the officials of the administration regarding the event. The central government has asked the administration to organise the event in collaboration with Punjab and Haryana.
The administration has been asked to provide a list of venues to the central government, which will finalise the venue. According to sources, Capitol Complex, road from Sukhna Lake to Rock Garden, a stretch on Jan Marg and Sector 34 Exhibition Ground are the possible venues for the event. The venue will be selected after getting clearance from the Special Protection Group (SPG). A team of senior officials, inclduing home secretary Anurag Agarwal, on Monday visited some of the possible venues for the event.
Last year, Modi did asanas on the first International Yoga Day along with 35,985 people belonging to 84 nationalities at Rajpath in Delhi, creating a world record. This will be Modi’s third visit to Chandigarh within a period of seven months.
The PM was in the city for French President Francois Hollande’s visit on January 24.
