As many as four accused, including inspector Naurang Singh, in the murder case of Bikramjit Singh on Wednesday surrendered before a court in Amritsar on Tuesday. The other three policemen who surrendered are Lakhwinder Singh, Jagjit Singh and Gurpreet Singh.
Murder convict Bikramjit was “interrogated to death” by the policemen of Counter Intelligence at Batala on the night of May 5.
The police had named as many as 14 accused in the case. With Tuesday’s surrender, only one accused ASI Baljit Singh is at large now.
Other accused who have already been arrested are ASI Gulshanbir Singh and ASI Sawinder Singh, head constables Amandeep, Lakhwinder Singh (two accused share the name), Angrej Singh, Randhir Singh and Maktool Singh, besides two other accused, who — as per SIT head in the case ADCP Naresh Kumar Sharma — were used by the police to lay trap, and Deep Raj Singh, who ran the tractor agency in Batala where Bikramjit was tortured to death.
A case of abduction was registered on May 6 after Bikramjit’s brother Dalbir Singh alleged that a police team had on May 5 abducted Bikramjit from Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar where he had been undergoing treatment for an orthopedic problem. Initially, police had termed it as a case of escape from police custody.
At a press conference on May 15, Amritsar Police Commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh had said that the deceased had “become an addict” and “often used to go home and out with the guard cops”. Commissioner said he developed close friendship with head constables Amandeep and Lakhwinder who were once deployed as hospital guards. Aulakh said Amandeep also started consuming drugs. He added that Amandeep was an old friend of ASI Gulshanbir as both served in Amritsar Rural police district.
Commissioner said the duo hatched a conspiracy to recover heroin and gave Rs 1.22 lakh to Bikramjit. Bikramjit came back with heroin on Chamrang Road in an hour’s time in a Bolero vehicle belonging to him. Aulakh said Counter Intelligence officials Gulshanbir, Sawinder, Baljit, Jagjit Singh and Gurpreet Singh, along with one Jagtar Singh, picked up Bikramjit along with his vehicle at about 7 pm and took him to Batala.
Aulakh said Bikramjit was interrogated at Batala where Inspector Naurang Singh was present. He said that except his underwear all clothes of Bikramjit were removed and he died following the interrogation. The accused took the dead body of Bikramjit and threw it into the Bhakra canal.
