Official of the Municipal Corporation on Thursday held a meeting with representatives of banks,government hospitals,Panjab University and Punjab Engineering College regarding fire safety measures undertaken in their respective buildings. The representatives of the institutes were asked to ensure compliance with safety norms in the buildings and hire trained manpower.
The meeting was chaired by joint commissioner-cum-chief fire officer Rajeev Gupta and attended by station fire officers along with representatives of the different organisations. The meeting was called in wake of recent incidents of fire.
The representatives of banks were warned that the fire department would start issuing final notices if the banks did not install necessary fire safety equipments in banks within the stipulated time. The need to appoint trained manpower was highlighted in order to handle any emergency. It was suggested that trained staff must be present round the clock in buildings to prevent a disaster. Fire officials asked for the escape routes to be cleared and to have proper parking arrangements to facilitate movement of fire tenders.
Hospitals,including Government Multi Specialty Hospital,Sector 16; Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research; and Government Medical College and Hospital,Sector 32,were asked to include fire safety features in the new proposed building plans. A fire audit of the existing buildings of the hospitals was recommended to check the efficiency of the system already installed.
