In poster war,walls ‘lose’ face

While candidates were very conscious of every penny spent in the Vidhan Sabha elections, candidates of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation have thrown caution to the wind.

While candidates were very conscious of every penny spent in the Vidhan Sabha elections, candidates of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation have thrown caution to the wind. Posters and hoardings of prospective candidates can be seen pasted on every flat surface of the city. The expenditure limit for the candidates is Rs 1.80 lakh but candidates are spending generously on advertisements and even offering langar in small public meetings.

A war of posters has broken out among the candidates apart from routine campaigning. This is especially witnessed in ward 59,where if the SAD candidate Tanvir Singh Dhaliwal displays one hoarding on a private property, the same da,Congress candidate Satwinder Jawaddi also displays a bigger hoarding around the same area.

The chowk near Model Town extension gurudwara has become the advertisement chowk. One can see hoardings of Surjit Kaur Dang – wife of sitting councillor Harbhajan Singh Dang,Rakhwinder Singh Gabria – son of former minister Rakhwinder Singh Gabria, and Manvinder Singh Makkar – son of SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar seeking voters approval.

On the southern bypass – independent candidate Kala has defaced public property by pasting his posters all along the wall of bridge and roads. Posters for SAD candidate Manvinder Singh Makkar are also visible everywhere in his ward. His posters can even be seen on MC garbage bins.

Pasting of posters is normally done during the night on private and public properties. However,so far,no resident has filed a formal complaint with the district administration in this regard.

ADC Rupanjali Kartik said,“So far we have not received any complaint from public regarding defacement. But MC is on the job to remove the posters and hoardings or book the expenses. So far no such expense report has come from them, but we will be getting them soon.”

In ward 54 posters for BJP candidate Pinki — daughter-in-law of former Ludhiana MP Lala Lajpat Rai — can be seen everywhere. Deepika Bhalla from Congress and Manish Sharma — Congress rebel are the other main candidates in the ward. The size of the hoardings of all these candidates keep on changing to compete with their rivals.

In ward 56 SAD candidate Bhupinder Singh Bhinda’s advertisements can be seen everywhere.Hoardings of Congress candidate Amrit Varsha Rampal can also be seen on select locations in the ward.

In ward 60 SAD candidate Jaswinder Singh Bhola and Congress candidate Rupinder Singh Sheela are also locked in a poster war. It seems their supporters are more keen in counting the number of posters of their rivals and doubling their own posters the very next day.

MLA apprises election body of
‘violence’ against
Congress workers

Former Congress MLA Jasbir Singh Dimpa in a complaint to the State Election Commission demanded deployment of paramilitary force, especially in wards 30,36 and 44 in view of the upcoming Amritsar Municipal Corporation elections.

Dimpa said he met the state election commissioner and informed the officer about incidents of violence against Congress workers.

He demanded that all wards falling in the Amritsar South Constituency be declared hypersensitive to ensure free and fair polls. SAD member Inderbir Singh Bolaria, however, dismissed all the allegations as being baseless.
