High drama was witnessed on the premises of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday, after a man was assaulted by relatives of the woman he had recently married.
Malkit Singh had approached the High Court with his wife,Priya Rani,to seek police protection from her family members. The runaway couple had recently married against the wishes of Priyas parents. Both are residents of Ludhiana.
On Tuesday morning,as the vacation bench was in progress in the High Court,Malkit was thrashed by Priyas family members and relatives in the canteen where he was having a meal with his wife. Despite intervention from those around, the agitated group did not stop. Soon, the police reached the spot and arrested them.
The angry relatives told the police that Malkit had lied to Priya and hid the fact that he was already married. Malkit responded that he had divorced his first wife about six months ago. Though the news came as a shock to Priya, she reportedly said she would stay with Malkit.
Later, the couple and the group were produced before the vacation bench, which directed the Ludhiana Senior Superintendent of Police Sukhchain Singh Gill to look into the matter. This was one of the many incidents of runaway couples being thrashed on the HC premises by angry relatives.
